Sosina Gashaw (EURECOM) : a Labex funded thesis to improve 2-wheel vehicles traffic management

Sosina Gashaw was awarded a Labex scholarship in 2014 for an original work on 2-wheel vehicles traffic management. Thanks to her for sharing a few words about it!


> Could you tell us a bit about your domain of research interest and its applications?

My current research interest focuses primarily on modeling and analysis of traffic flow consisting of 2-wheelers. The main applications of my research are in traffic management and new mobility solution development, e.g. transport policies/strategies for 2-wheelers traffic, integration of 2-wheel vehicles in highway capacity estimates, personalized navigation and location-based solutions for 2-wheel vehicles, etc.

> What challenges do you project address?

High rate of growth has been recorded in 2-wheel vehicles (scooters, motorcycles,...) use over the last 10 years, with the worsening traffic congestion being the major factor. Such trend would be seen as positive if the vulnerable nature and peculiar mobility behavior of 2-wheelers were not a challenge for the coexistence with other road users. Despite a broad advancement in cooperative Intelligent transport systems (C-ITS) technologies, all the efforts focused so far on enhancing traffic safety and efficiency of cars traffic alone. The most vulnerable traffic users are therefore not 'visible' to the cooperative traffic safety and efficiency applications currently being developed. Especially, considering the growing share of 2-wheelers traffic and the over-representation of accidents involving them, safety measures implemented are unproportional to the criticality of the problems.
The project is initiated by these challenges that come as a consequence of increased use of 2-wheelers, and the need for the solutions addressing such concerns. More specifically, the project aims to pave a way for a safe and efficient integration of 2-wheelers to the traffic systems by providing theoretical and methodological foundations.

> Do you work with industrial partners?

Currently, we don't work with any industrial partners. However, BMW which is one of industrial partners of EURECOM has indicated its interest on my research.
> What were the required scientific/technical/financial resources?

The project requires multidisciplinary competence and this is achieved through collaboration between EURECOM and Inria. EURECOM's theoretical and applied expertise in microscopic vehicular mobility modeling and cooperative intelligent transport systems is complemented with theoretical and applied expertise in macroscopic vehicular mobility modeling from Inria. Concerning the required financial resources, indeed this project would not be possible without the funding from Labex UCN@Sophia.

> You are in the last part of your work. Has your topic evolved since you began?

Yes, there is a growing interest on the topic from different directions. For instance recently the CAR2CAR communication consortium created a working group on 2-wheelers. Further more, traffic simulation platforms are appearing with the support to 2-wheelers traffic, which is a good move since real mobility traces are still widely lacking.

> What's next for you?

I am completing my PhD work, which is targeted to finish in 2018. I also have a plan to do an internship in a company.
